How to make a good impression

If you want the job you are interviewing for, you need to be aware of a few things. The interviewing tips presented below offer some outstanding advice for job candidates.

Make an effort to make a good impression.

Your appearance will make a lasting impression. Even if you are only going to pick up forms or drop off an application, dress in clothing that is suitable for the type of job you are seeking.

Interviewing Tips - How you Look and What to Wear

  1. Get a good night's sleep the night before

  2. Freshen up with a shower or bath

  3. Shave or trim facial hair

  4. Hair should be clean and well groomed

  5. Brush your teeth and use a mouthwash

  6. Do not wear perfumes or aftershave

  7. Makeup and jewelry should be simple and kept to a minimum

  8. Wear clean, neat clothing

  9. Wear socks or stocking with shoes

  10. Shine dress shoes or heels

Now, you know what to wear and how you should look. But, did you know that getting to the job interview may take some planning, too? You have to be prepared for everything.

Interviewing tips - Getting to the appointment:

  • • Reach your job interview ahead of time - preferably 15 minutes, but at least 5 minutes

  • • Know your route ahead of time and, if possible, make a trial run to time your trip.

  • • If you have children or other dependents, plan for their care and/or transportation.

  • • If you take a bus or mass transit, know the schedule and how long the trip takes.

  • • Bad weather can cause delays; leave a safety cushion of extra time.

  • • If you drive, check your gas gauge the night before to make sure you have enough gas for the trip, or leave enough time to stop for gas.

  • • Have an alternate option for emergency transportation.

  • • Interviews can be stressful, but not as much when you are truly prepared. Take a look at these interview tips and see if you have everything in order.

Interviewing Tips - Attitude and Research:

Be Enthusiastic: Show your interest in the job you are seeking and in the company to which you are applying. Let your energy show.

Be Yourself: Be the real you as it will help you relax during an interview and cut down on stress.

Be Prepared: Review your resume/job application before the interview to have it fresh in your mind. It's the best way to prepare for the interview as it will be the information the interviewer has about you. Keep an extra copy or two of your resume with you, too. This will enable you to provide information that may be required and to complete an application form if it was not done before the interview.

Be Informed: Your knowledge of the prospective employer will contribute to the positive image you want to create. Research the organization before the interview: talk to others who work there; ask for information about the organization and for a job description when the interview is set up; use the public library's reference books on public and private organizations.

Be Honest: Tell the interviewer about your qualifications, accomplishments and experience, including any volunteer work you have done. If you haven't had a particular kind of experience, go ahead and admit that, but also indicate your willingness to learn new skills. However, you don't have volunteer information if they don't ask. Simply present yourself as a positive person with skills to offer the employer.
