Phone Interview Techniques

You need to be aware of phone interview techniques so that you can succeed in the job search. Employers make use of telephone interviews as a way to identify and recruit people for jobs when those individuals can't appear in person - or to streamline the interview process. A telephone interview could be used to screen applicants to narrow down the number of people who will be asked to interview in person. These kinds of interviews make the whole process much less expensive when out of town applicants are being interviewed, as well.

Because of this, you need to be prepared to participate in a phone interview on short notice. After all, you never know when you'll be called and asked to talk about your qualifications.

Why Is The Phone Interview So Important?

Phone interviews shouldn't be taken lightly. They're just as important as a face to face interview. They could even be considered more important! That's because a phone interview could be the process that weeds you out of the select few asked to interview in person, or it could be the thing that keeps you in. To keep from being dropped from the list, you're going to need to know what to say and be prepared to say it with style. You never want to sound like you've been caught off guard.

How Is A Phone Interview Different From A Face-To-Face Interview?

In a phone interview, professional speech and the way you present yourself are important. That's the same for an in person interview. However, unlike an interview face to face, an interviewer on the phone doesn't have physical cues to work from. While that means your appearance won't be important, it also means that a friendly face or the way you look interested in the job won't come across. You need to work on having a good telephone manner and sounding prepared for everything. Many professionals suggest you stand up during a telephone interview and smile at various times. A smile can come across in a phone interview.

Phone Interview Techniques and Preparation?

Preparing for a phone interview is vital, because it's easy to be caught off guard by that call. Often, the recruiter is going to want to interview you right away. If that's not possible, you should reschedule in a calm, professional manner. However, if you can, you should take that call. Be sure you're ready to talk about yourself, your prospective employer, and why you're right for the job.

Phone Interview Techniques and Research

  1. Research the company - Knowing about the company you want to work with shows that you take initiative. Explain why you want the job and why you're the best person for it. Knowing everything you can about your prospective employer is smart for any interview situation.

  2. Practice interview questions - There are a lot of common interview questions you can expect to run into. Practice responding to them with a friend or family member - or just in front of the mirror. Don't memorize your answers, but be ready and able to respond quickly and intelligently when you're asked.

  3. Match skills with job requirements - If you've put in an application for the job, you probably know what the requirements are. Figure out which of your skills go with them, and be willing, ready and able to explain how they'll work to the company's advantage. This is your opportunity to sell yourself.

How Will Good Preparation Impress The Employer?

Many people aren't going to be ready for their phone interview. If you know what you're doing and are ready for the interview, you're going to prove that you're really invested in the job. Employers are impressed when people take initiative and do their planning. If you really want the job, be ready for that phone interview.
